Considering a Used 2017 Raptor - Thoughts?

Hi everyone, I found a 2017 Raptor for sale at $36K with 102k miles at a dealership. I’ve never owned a Ford before, so I’m unsure if it’s a good deal considering the mileage. How reliable are they with over 100k miles? Is it worth it?

I’d suggest checking the blue book value and looking into the truck’s damage history. I’ve got a 2018 and haven’t had any major issues. The Gen 2 Raptors are pretty reliable overall.

One thing to check is if the cam phaser recall has been done. Also, be cautious buying a used Raptor since they tend to be driven harder than regular F150s.

Exactly, make sure the cam phaser work has been done. If it has, that’s a positive. The EcoBoost engines are solid, but I’d also recommend considering the 2019 or 2020 models, as they had a mid-cycle refresh and a slightly better reliability rating. Either way, I’d suggest getting a warranty for peace of mind.

I have a 2017 with 113,000 miles and it’s been great, even running a stage 2 tune. Just check the cam phasers and you should be fine. It’s a blast to drive every day!

I bought a 2013 Raptor with 170k miles and spent about $5k on maintenance, but it’s been a reliable truck. Ford trucks are generally solid, and parts are easy to find, plus they last. I had an F250 with 270k miles before and it was as tough as nails.

@Teo
Same here. I bought a Gen 1 with 140k miles, put about $5k into maintenance, and it’s still running strong. Hoping it lasts another 140k!

That 2017 at $36k seems to be in a fair range for its mileage. $64k for a 2020 with only 45k miles seems overpriced though, but the 2017 price is fine.

Yeah, $64k for a 2020 with 45k miles is definitely overpriced. That’s probably why it’s not selling.

Not sure that’s how pricing works, though.

I wouldn’t recommend a Gen 2 with that kind of mileage unless it’s covered under an extended warranty. These trucks can be fun but costly to maintain.

Noooo

Thanks for all the great feedback, everyone!

Definitely get a warranty! I have a 2018 with 89k miles, and I’m dealing with engine work right now.

It’s a used sports vehicle. Be cautious about buying a used performance truck.

I’ve had my 2017 with 83k miles for 6 years. I’ve followed the maintenance schedule, and most of my miles are highway miles. I’ve had issues like cam phaser replacements and some leaks, but I still love it. These trucks are great for off-roading and long trips.

@Micah
The second cam phaser replacement will be pricey.

Yeah, Ford quoted me around $4500 for the cam phaser work. I’ll be doing it myself when I get the time, but it’s going to be a pain.
