Lately, I’ve been seeing smoke coming from my exhaust, and it’s pretty strong-smelling. Happens mostly during startup, but if I sit and idle for more than 30 minutes, the smoke starts pouring out. I work in oil and gas, so sometimes I have to idle waiting for a job to start. Anyone know what could be causing this? I have a dealer appointment soon, but any advice before then would be appreciated.
I had the same issue with my 2018 after idling for over 30 minutes. It did this every time, but somehow the dealership could never “replicate” the problem. Ended up trading it in.
From what I read before, it’s probably a bad turbo seal.
Yeah, probably the turbo seal. Mine went bad, and the truck would smoke like crazy. It got worse over time until it did it all the time. Only then did the dealer finally acknowledge it. Magic, right?
I recorded a video for the dealer showing the temperature and everything, just to make sure they see I’m not imagining things.
Turbo seal issues are pretty common with this generation.
That’s what I’m hoping it is!
My 2020 has done that sometimes since I got it, and now I’ve got over 100k miles. The smoke smells like it’s burning a bit rich on startup but clears up after. I think it might be from the rings being cold and burning a little oil, or maybe it’s just running rich. If you’re not losing coolant or burning through oil fast, I wouldn’t stress too much.
Wow, 100k on a ‘20? My ‘14 just hit 65k miles.
I’m at 90k on my 2018.
That smoke at startup is normal. It’s only something to worry about if it happens constantly.
It’s been getting worse lately. I feel like I’m driving a spy car with how much smoke I can leave behind.
Haha, I get that. It’s tough to diagnose online, but mine has always done a bit of smoking at startup since it was new. I’ve got 150k miles on my 2018 and haven’t had any real issues. If it keeps happening after it’s warmed up, though, it’s probably worth checking out. Good luck!
Try doing a pressure test on your cooling system. If it drops pressure, it could be something like a turbo seal or maybe a head gasket.
Yeah, I’m planning on doing that once I get back home.
Same thing happened with mine. Dealer checked and saw the smoke but said the turbos were fine. They ended up finding oil leaking into a cylinder and replaced the whole head. Warranty covered it except for the $200 deductible, and no issues since.
Honestly, hoping that’s my issue too.
This happened to me three times. Once after starting and shutting off the truck a few times in 10 minutes. Other times it was just idling for 10 minutes. Recently, after idling 15 minutes, I drove off and got a check engine light for misfires on 3 cylinders. Dealer found a stuck injector and also updated the transmission tune. So far, no smoke and the truck runs much better now. Hope this helps.
White smoke usually means coolant is getting burned. Could be a sign of a head gasket issue.
Really hoping that’s not the case, lol.
