Hello, there’s a 2017 Raptor for sake for 36K at a dealership with 102k miles. I’ve never had a Ford so I’m wondering if it’s a bad buy with it being over 100k. How’s the reliability? Is it worth it? Thanks in advance.
I recommend checking the blue book value and any damage history. I have a 2018 model and absolutely love it. I haven’t encountered any major issues with my Gen 2, and I find it to be a reliable truck, so those are definitely factors to consider.
One thing I’d be concerned about is whether the cam phaser recall has been completed. Also, buying a used Raptor in general worries me because I know people tend to drive them harder than a regular F-150.
I have a 2017 model with 113,000 miles running a stage 2 tune from Goosetuned, and it’s fantastic. Just make sure the cam phasers are in good shape. I drive it daily, and it’s the most fun vehicle I’ve ever owned.
I can’t speak for the 2015+ models, but I bought my 2013 Raptor with 170,000 miles. I put about $5,000 into it—half for replacing the entire A/C system and the rest for regular maintenance. It had been well maintained, which was a plus. Overall, the entire lineup of Ford trucks is reliable and improves with each year, plus there are so many interchangeable parts.
Before the Raptor, I had a 2001 F-250 with the 7.3L diesel that had 270,000 miles on it. That truck was solid. I burned out the transmission trying to get unstuck from a muddy field, but other than that, it was just regular maintenance with the occasional fix for a small issue. I could usually use parts from the current, previous, or next-gen trucks.
I’ve never experienced a catastrophic failure with any major components, but there are plenty of cosmetic and convenience features that tend to break over time. It’s more of an annoyance than anything else. Regarding a Raptor with 102,000 miles, these trucks are so over-engineered that I had no hesitation buying mine with nearly twice that mileage.
Make sure to get a warranty! My 2018 model with 89,000 miles is currently undergoing engine work.
It’s a used sports vehicle, so always be careful when purchasing one.
I’ve owned my 2017 model for six years, and it currently has 83,000 miles. I’ve changed the oil every 3,000 to 4,000 miles and followed the maintenance schedule closely. Most of the mileage comes from highway driving between AZ, CO, NM, TX, and WY, and I’ve never towed anything with it. Here’s a rundown of the issues I’ve encountered since I bought it:
- Cam phaser replacement at 35,000 miles (covered under warranty).
- Leaking oil pan gasket, transmission gasket, and differential seal at 50,000 miles (also under warranty).
- Broken panoramic sunroof track and the back sliding window/track fell off.
- Wastegate rattle (ongoing).
- Severe cam phaser rattle again at 75,000 miles (ongoing); I have to hold the gas pedal down while cranking until I can replace them with updated ones. I don’t get to drive it much these days.
- Most recently, I had a speed sensor and TCM failure; the transmission was shifting erratically and going into limp mode. I replaced both, and it shifts fine now.
Despite these issues, I absolutely love the truck. I’ve taken it on some amazing trips, including desert runs in AZ, mountain crawling in CO and WY, and many great road trips.
