Should I trade my Mustang for a 2020 Ford Raptor?

I’m thinking about trading my 2018 Mustang GT PP1 (70k miles) for a 2020 Ford Raptor with 20k miles. Financing is all set, so that’s not a problem, but I want to get some feedback on whether this is a smart move or not.

I’m getting a $23.5k offer for my Mustang, but I’m hoping to push for $25k or settle for $24.5k. The Raptor is priced at $71k. Should I try to negotiate more on either the trade-in or the truck?

Also, is the extended warranty package worth it? It’s an extra $3.8k. My dad’s friend, who has owned a used car dealership for years, suggested selling my car to CarMax (they offered $23k) and waiting for the new Raptor models coming out Nov-Jan before buying. But I really love the 2nd-gen look and feel like it’s the right time to buy now.

Do you think this truck could turn out to be a lemon? Will the extended warranty protect me if it is? I skipped the extended warranty on my Mustang and now I’m dealing with radio issues and occasional transmission pops. So, I’m leaning toward getting one this time. Let me know what you think!

Why are you set on the Raptor? Are you planning to tow or use it for something specific?

You could probably get a new XLT with the 3.5 for less money and still have a brand-new warranty.

Honestly, I just love the way it looks. Plus, I need more space than the Mustang offers. My Mustang is lowered, so getting in and out of some places is a pain. The truck would solve that. But yeah, if the Raptor didn’t look as good as it does, I’d probably just get another Mustang.

A year and a half ago, I sold my '17 Shelby GT350 and traded my '14 F-150 Limited for a '19 Raptor. Zero regrets. I got mine in Ford Performance Blue with 44k miles for $65k.

I didn’t get the extended warranty because I modify my vehicles, so it would’ve been pointless for me. The only issue I’ve had is with the cam phasers, which is common with the 3.5 Ecoboost. Mine started acting up two months after I bought it, but it was covered under warranty, and they replaced them with the updated version.

The Raptor is such a fun truck to drive. It’s not just a pavement princess either—I’ve taken it off-road a lot. It’s comfortable for long trips, and the active suspension is fantastic. The power is always there when you need it, and if you want even more, a Goosetune will transform the truck. The only downside is the sound—it’s not a V8, and you can tell, but you get used to it.

If you love the look and can justify the price, go for it. The Gen 3 Raptors have a nicer interior and independent rear suspension, but I also prefer the look of the Gen 2. Either way, you can’t go wrong. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That’s an impressive lineup of Mustangs you’ve had. My first car was a '13 V6 Mustang, and now I’ve got the '18 GT. I would’ve gone for a Shelby when I was younger, but I’ve gotten into the outdoors more, and the Mustang just doesn’t work for that—especially since it’s lowered and I baby the aftermarket wheels. I test-drove the Raptor yesterday, and I’m even more in love with it now. Got pre-approved for a loan today, so I’m ready to pull the trigger!

Nice! You’re going to love it. It’s comfortable on long trips and surprisingly capable off-road, even stock. It can handle trails, moderate rocks, and even 30 inches of water if needed. The factory KO2 tires are solid too. Enjoy the new ride! :sunglasses:

V6? Nah, stick with a V8. Ooga booga.

Unless it’s the Ecoboost V6. I’d take my Flex engine over a Mustang any day, and I’ve owned two Mustangs! Going from a muscle car to a “minivan toaster” that’s way faster was… interesting.

It’s a wagon, not a minivan!

Don’t tell my wife! She wanted a minivan for the kids, so I found the Flex on YouTube and sold her on it being an SUV. She still thinks it’s a minivan because I put the pedal commander in ‘Eco’ mode when she drives it.
