Should I Leave My Gen 2 for a Gen 3 Raptor?

I’m currently driving a 2019 Gen 2 Raptor with the 802A package and Whipple Stage 2 – fully loaded and sitting at 72k miles. I love this truck, and it’s fully paid off, which is a huge plus. But… I’ve had a string of issues: cam phasers (twice), check engine lights for overboost at least six times, and now a turbo failure, which is why it’s currently at the dealer.

My extended warranty is up at 75k miles, and I’m honestly nervous about having more problems once that warranty expires. I’m seriously considering trading it in for a Gen 3, but it’s hard to imagine giving up my Raptor.

Anyone here had both Gen 2 and Gen 3 Raptors? How does the Gen 3 stack up? And do you think it’s likely I’ll have fewer issues with the Gen 3?

I swapped my Gen 2 for a Gen 3 when my warranty was almost up. Had a lot of issues with the Gen 2, but my Gen 3 has been much better all around.

Same story here. My Gen 2 had endless issues: cam phasers, turbo failure, catalytic converter problems, wheel bearings, transmission issues – all before 65k miles. Switched to a Gen 3, and I’m at 30k miles with no issues other than a minor stereo update.

The Gen 3 suspension is a game changer. If you’re on the fence, I’d say go for it!

I’ve got a 2019 too, bought it with a 6-year/150k-mile warranty that expires in 2025. No major issues so far, other than a transmission reflash. I’m at 54k miles and considering just extending the premium care warranty instead of upgrading. The warranty would cost around $2k, which might be worth it since I haven’t had issues yet.

@Sloane
I’d recommend getting the warranty. I had zero problems until around 98k miles, then the cam phasers and transmission failed just before the 100k warranty expired. I’m keeping mine too because I’m over making payments.

I’m still in my Gen 2, so I can’t compare directly, but if getting a Gen 3 will give you peace of mind, go for it. We’re all here because we love these trucks, so pick the one that’ll make you happiest.

I’ve seen quite a few Gen 2s that get worked hard in the desert end up needing new engines between 60-80k miles. I’ve personally watched two break down on the trail – both were well-maintained but had more dirt miles than pavement.

With the better suspension on the Gen 3 and your warranty nearing its end, I’d lean towards upgrading.

Did the Whipple kit affect your extended warranty at all?

Also, just to add – I’m in a Gen 3, and I love it.

Thankfully, no! My dealer has an in-house customs shop that warranties any aftermarket mods they install. So, I’m covered.

I’ve owned Gen 1s, a Gen 2, and now a Gen 3. Each generation has definitely improved. Getting the cam phasers fixed would be cheaper than buying a new truck, but I have no regrets moving up, especially with the 37-inch package.

The sound on the Gen 3 is a nice upgrade too!

Honestly, I’m not a fan of the Gen 3 interiors. I went from a 2021 XLT to a 2018 Raptor, and I just don’t like the Gen 3 interior setup.

Did you sit in a 3.5 model?
