Oil changes - Ford Raptor

How are you supposed to change the oil filter on these trucks? The filter is buried up in there where you have to contort your arm around the frame to reach it and then if it’s on tight you’re screwed because you can’t get much leverage or tools up there. I don’t want to pay to have someone do it but will after this one. Right now I feel like tracking down whichever Ford engineer designed this and making him do 1,000 of them in a row without any breaks…

2020 Gen2

I did it myself once in the 21k miles I’ve driven, and it ended up costing me more to do it, including cleanup and disposal, than if I had just had Ford take care of it.

You didn’t mention your truck’s year, so I can only guess what might be going on. It’s important to include that info.

If you’re in a Gen 2 or Gen 3, there’s an access plate you can remove with hand tools. Just make sure not to reuse the plastic drain plug—if your truck is a 2017 model year or older (Gen 2), you’ll need a new one.

Has a metal plug. Think I’m gonna get those oil filter wrenches with claws and see how that goes.

I’ve got a 2020 as well and have changed it a few times. It’s tough and takes some time to get it done. I found that using a strap wrench to loosen it works well. I should mention, though, I have access to a lift when I change my oil, so that gives me an advantage.

Those guys at Jiffy Lube are pros!

Brother, I feel your pain! I just changed my oil today too, and I was cursing those damn engineers the whole time.

I had to go at it from the top with a standard circle oil filter wrench, cracking it a quarter inch at a time, just to get it started. Then, I had to use the so-called access plate on the bottom, twisting my arm into a Z-shape like something out of Tetris to finish unscrewing it and get the new one on. That claw oil filter wrench was absolutely useless here. The circle squeeze one was a must.

On the flip side, I changed the oil in my 4Runner too, and the oil filter location is perfect. But, I somehow torqued it way too much last time, so I had to bust out the old screwdriver and hammer trick. F me sideways, it’s always something!
