Need advice on buying a 2020 Gen 2 Raptor

I’m looking at this 2020 Gen 2 802a with 80k miles for $44k at my local Ford dealer. It’s a one-owner truck, clean title, no accidents, maintained at the same dealer, and was a local trade. I’m thinking about getting a warranty too. Anything I should keep an eye out for? Thoughts on the price? PFA

Definitely get the warranty, maybe through Ford. I’ve heard good things about Ziegler. Also, check if the cam phasers were done—that’s a big deal. And the moonroof, make sure it works every time. If it’s acting up, it might need new rails.

I’ve seen Ziegler mentioned a lot, I’ll definitely give them a call! Also, I think the cam phasers were updated in 2020 to avoid those issues, but I could be wrong.

If it was built after 11/19, it should have the new phasers. You can check the build date on the sticker inside the driver’s door.

Just a heads-up, Ziegler won’t sell a warranty to anyone in California. You can only get a Ford ESP through the dealer there. If you’re not in CA, you’re lucky! lol.

Good thing I’m in Michigan, lol.

Lucky you! The price on that truck isn’t bad either. Here in California, a similar one with 80k miles would go for around $50k. I’m also on the hunt for a 2020 802a, but I’m super picky, so still no luck. lol.

I’m picky too, but this one checks most of my boxes—especially with the condition and price. I did want the factory beadlock wheels, though, so I might have to hunt for those on the marketplace.

Hopefully it’s got the new phasers, and if they were replaced, they should be good for a long time.

Yeah, 2020 models got the updated cam phasers. For warranties, check out Lombard as well; that’s who I went with. 2020 is a solid year for Gen 2—most of the main problems were fixed. Just double-check everything else is working: heated/cooled seats, moonroof, windows, lights, heated steering, etc. Also, make sure the transmission shifts smoothly, and watch for any weird shifting. Check for any water leaks or mold in the floors, especially around the driver’s seat and rear passenger areas. At 80k miles, the suspension may need a rebuild or replacement. Test it out on speed bumps or potholes to see if you notice any excessive body roll.

I did feel the transmission shifting harder in Sport mode. I’m doing another test drive on Monday, so I’ll check more things then. The moonroof worked fine, and the driver’s seat makes a louder noise when moving back, but not forward. All the lights seem good, though.

What did you mean by ‘rails’ for the moonroof? Mine’s a little messed up—it works, but a small piece that keeps the flap down broke, so it’s a pain to close because it keeps detecting the flap in the way. Is that what you’re talking about?

I have a 2020 Gen 2 that was built in November 2019. I bought it 18 months ago with 20,000 miles for $55k. It came with a 100,000-mile warranty, and honestly, it’s the best decision I’ve ever made when it comes to cars. It has 30,000 miles on it now, and I’ve had zero issues. My advice? Buy it, don’t overthink it.

Thanks for the feedback! I’m definitely getting a warranty to be safe. Now, just hoping the interest rates don’t kill me, haha.

Does Ziegler offer warranties for high-mileage vehicles?

That’s a lot of miles, but go for it! I’ve got a 2020 with 45,000 miles, and I haven’t had any issues.

Did you know Raptors were inaccurately portrayed in Jurassic Park? The term ‘Raptor’ blew up in popularity because of the movie, but they were actually smaller and had feathers. Ford should’ve gone with ‘Brontosaurus.’

Haha, Ford Broncosaurus would’ve been hilarious.

FYI, it’s normal for the transmission to shift harder in Sport mode. Nothing to worry about.
