Hi all. Always been into sports cars, but I finally added a truck to the garage. I was thinking of getting a Ranger Raptor, ZR2, or AT4X, but I couldn’t resist the look and features of this one.
I have a couple of questions:
Is it normal for this truck to have a very faint exhaust pop or blow-off? I’ve only done some light, fun driving on dry roads and noticed it.
There’s a soft thud coming from the back sometimes. I’ll try to figure out exactly when it happens, but does anyone know what it might be? It’s quiet, and I mostly notice it in Normal mode.
@Micah
I notice the thud when the truck is moving, but on my M3, I usually hear it when I’m coming to a stop, especially in 1st or 2nd gear.
It’s funny because one reason I got this truck was to avoid random noises like that. My M3 had a similar issue, and replacing the transmission mounts almost got rid of it entirely. I changed the diff mounts two years ago, too.
@Blaze
Looks like you’ve swapped one noisy ride for another haha.
For the thud, mounts could help. I have an Evo 9, and the thud there comes from the rear diff handling all the stress. I’ve driven cars with upgraded bushings, and it eliminates the sound, but I worry the extra stress could damage the drivetrain. Mine isn’t a daily, so I just leave it alone.
@Blaze
From what I’ve heard, it’s unique to the Gen 3 because of the trombone-style exhaust. Gen 2 owners don’t talk about pops or burbles from their trucks.
Try putting it in Sport mode with Baja exhaust settings. If the sound gets louder, then it’s normal. Mine pops and burbles faintly in Normal, but switching to Baja makes it much louder. It mostly happens when shifting gears or coming to a stop.
