I work in wind energy, and instead of renting an apartment, I want to get a Raptor with a camper shell. I found some shells for around $10k, but I’m unsure which year of Raptor to go for. I don’t mind traveling to find the right one. I have $15k for a down payment and plan to finance the rest. What do you all recommend?
It really depends on what you’re looking for. If you want more features and comfort, go for a Gen 2 or Gen 3. If you prefer simplicity and a lower cost, the Gen 1 with the 6.2L engine is a solid choice.
@Shae
Gen 1 is amazing, but make sure to check for rust, especially on the rockers. I loved my Ruby Red '14 but had to sell it because of rust issues.
@Shae
Thanks! I’ve been leaning towards 2019 or newer.

I’ve owned both a Gen 2 and a Gen 3, and the Gen 3 is better in every way. You can’t really go wrong, though.
If you’re okay with the EcoBoost engine, I’d recommend looking at a used 2021. They’re great trucks.

Thanks! I found one but decided to hold off for a few months so I can save more and keep looking.
- I have both a supercharged Gen 1 and a Gen 2 as my daily driver. I’d sell the Gen 2 before ever letting go of my Gen 1.

Why is that? I love hearing why people prefer Gen 1 over Gen 2.
@Zephyr
Because the Gen 2 engines are junk, plain and simple.

What about the Gen 3?

Do you hear anyone complaining about cam phasers or plastic oil pans on the Gen 3? Exactly.
@Zephyr
For me, it’s all about the V8 in the Gen 1.
Gen 1 for sure! I absolutely love mine. Picked it up with 116k miles and only one previous owner.

No way! The interior, power, and suspension on the Gen 3 are way better. I’ve had both a Gen 2 and Gen 3, and the Gen 3 is miles ahead.
Are you planning to live in the bed of the Raptor with a camper shell? If so, that’s awesome, but keep in mind all Raptors have a 5.5’ bed. Make sure that works for your needs.

Yep, that’s the plan! Here’s the camper I found. I’d rather save money and stay on-site while working at different wind farms. I have a house, so I don’t want to pay for an apartment I’ll barely use. Plus, I’m 5’10" and sleep curled up, so the size won’t be an issue. I’ve even slept in the back of my Chrysler 200 before!
@Zephyr
That’s a great idea! I was picturing a basic camper shell like this. Living on-site will save you so much money. Slide-in pop-ups are another option you might like. Post an update once you’ve got it set up—I’d love to see it!
@Tristan
Thanks! I can’t wait to explore and maybe even try some metal detecting in the old towns I’ll be near.
I’d say go for a 2021 or newer. The Gen 3 is a huge step up from the older ones.
