Looking at getting a truck in the next handful of months. I live in the desert if that matters.
Always assumed I’d get a Tundra but recently been considering a used Raptor. Not really a Ford guy and concerned about reliability, but I am impressed by them for what I know.
Currently have a GX470 that I couldn’t be happier with, which is why I’ve just assumed I’d stick with Toyota.
Do you need a bed? Why replace the GX470? That is an excellent vehicle. I personally love the looks of the Ford Raptor, but I don’t think I would ever own one. They’re super flashy expensive trucks that you’re paying a premium for. Buying used, where the previous owner probably abused it, would be risky. I would rather buy an F350 or 3500 diesel, but I tow heavy equipment and camper trailers where I am kind of pushing the limits of the Tundra. I am biased towards Toyota (and everyone else here), but I say the Tundra would be a significantly better truck if you’re worried about reliability.

I mean if money is no object… the Raptor is kinda ahead of everyone else. I would wait until you can drive a new TRD Pro to see how they compare.
Yea, in terms of raw capability, the Raptor is still king. The TRD Pro matches closer to the F-150 Tremor, and not surprising given they’re similar in price.
The Ford Raptor is a hell of a good-looking truck, and it’s fast… But Toyota is much more reliable than Ford. Speaking from owning both… a Tundra is an all-in-one rig.
They’re apples and oranges, really. I would sit down and figure out what you need out of a truck. Each one (new or used) will bring many different features and capabilities to the table. You’ll probably need to test drive both, too. If you’re literally just buying a truck to have a truck, get a Raptor. It’ll probably resell better even though Toyotas do have great resale.
I don’t think I’d buy a new Tundra or any new Toyota at this point. I don’t think a 6-cylinder in a full-sized truck will be as reliable as the older V8s. Luckily, I have a Gen1 Tundra and a '99 Land Cruiser, so I’m set for many years.
I’ve owned three Raptors. Currently have a Gen 3. No truck comes close to them. Don’t listen to the reliability hate. I’ve had zero issues with them thus far, and I beat the hell out of them. Feel free to DM with any questions.
They aren’t the same. The Raptor is a much better out-of-the-box off-roader. It’s more expensive but it’s arguably the best out there. Reliability-wise, the Raptor is fine; don’t listen to people who attack it. The V8 in the Tundra is amazing, extremely reliable. No issues at all compared to the F-150. However, if you’re talking about the new V6 TT, I’d say the Ford is a better option because they’ve already been using it for a while.
I sold my V8 4Runner, which is basically a GX470, and bought a 2019 Tundra. No regrets! Same mpg, better highway manners, more stable towing, and way more power!
Two different trucks, not even in the same class. Get the Raptor and sell it later if it is not to your liking. You will likely get good money for it. If you are talking about the new Gen 3 Tundra, I would wait a few years before buying this new Gen. COVID-related issues seem to have magnified problems with the new model, and I doubt we’ve seen all the issues yet.
