So I just got an oil change at the Ford dealer and they told me about some recalls, couple smalls ones, but namely, 2 huge ones. Sounds like transmission issues (I haven’t heard any of the issues they describe, I’ve only got 3300 miles so maybe that’s part of it.) and some sort of head/valve cover leaking issues.
They checked the tailgate step recall while they did the oil change and that was fine, but they want the truck for 5 business days to do just the valve/head recall. 2 different Fords both said the same thing, so it seems they really do need it for that long.
My question is, should I get the transmission recall done? I’ve offered to let a tech drive it or drive with me to see if they can see/hear something I don’t. I don’t want to drop the transmission for no reason, plainly, I don’t trust techs to do a good job with big jobs like that unless it’s absolutely necessary. Both separate service managers told me they wouldn’t recommend doing that one unless I’m showing symptoms.
The problem with the transmission is that it loses output shaft speed from the sensor and automatically shifts down to first gear. This can be a significant issue if you’re on the freeway. The initial recall involved a computer flash to prevent the problem, but I’m not sure about this new recall. My dad, who recently retired from Ford, hopes it addresses the faulty connector in the transmission that’s causing the issue.
You still have plenty of time left on your powertrain warranty. I started noticing issues with my Gen 2 gradually—hard shifting and clunking during downshifts. When I took it in at 67,000 miles (with an extended Ford warranty), the technician drove it and recommended a new transmission. I’m picking my truck up later today. What I’m saying is to give it a bit more time before deciding to have them perform a major repair, as you mentioned.
