So I’ve noticed something odd while driving on the highway. When the RPMs are holding steady at 1800-1900 (normal for 65-75 mph), it feels like the truck is surging. The speedometer doesn’t move, and the RPMs stay steady, but it’s like the engine or turbos can’t decide if they should boost or not. Has anyone else dealt with this? It’s super annoying and happens the entire time I’m in that range. For context, I do have bad cam phasers, but I’m not sure if it’s connected.
It’s probably the cam phasers. Mine does the same thing when they start going bad.

I also get a ticking noise at idle. I’ve heard that can be related to the phasers too?
@Robin
If it ticks or knocks at startup, that’s a classic phaser issue. But I haven’t experienced idle ticking lasting longer than 30 seconds or so from phasers.

Hmm, maybe it’s not the phasers then. It might just be how the engine normally sounds. Honestly, with these phaser issues, I’m overanalyzing every little thing right now. Could just be me being paranoid .
@Robin
Totally get that! I went through the same phase of overthinking everything. Have you checked your radiator fans? I once had a knocking noise, and it turned out to be mud in the fan bearing that threw it off balance.
I’ve had a similar surge happen a couple of times. For me, it seemed to happen after long road trips. I figured it might’ve been bad fuel or maybe even vapor lock in the gas tank because it went away on its own. My cam phasers weren’t failing when it happened though.
