Switching from 2H to 4A While Driving… Safe?

Today I was driving my 2024 Raptor around the PNW area in 2H since it was dry. Once I got closer to the mountains, the rain started pouring, and I started to wonder…

Is it safe to switch from 2H to 4A while I’m driving at highway speeds, like 70+ mph? And is there a max speed for 4A? Can I keep it on even if I need to go 80?

Yeah, totally safe. 4A is basically AWD, so you can switch from 2H to 4A at any speed without issues.

I was going up the mountain out of Steamboat Springs the other day and started to lose the back end in 2H. Switched to 4A at speed, and it handled perfectly. Ended up towing a Buick SUV that couldn’t make it up an icy hill. To be fair, the Baja Boss AT tires were probably the real MVP.

You can run 4A anytime you want, no harm to the truck.

If it wasn’t safe, the truck wouldn’t let you do it.

You should try hitting 4L at 70 and see what happens!

Not volunteering for that experiment, but yeah, you have to go to neutral before 4L anyway.

We’re talking about 4A, not 4L. Definitely wouldn’t work with 4L!

2WD is fine for rain.

Haha, someone downvoted you, so I gave you an upvote. People thinking you need 4WD just for rain is funny.

I’ve had my rear end slip a bit in 2H when I’m turning in Seattle’s rain.

I bought my '24 in April, and the day after, it was raining. Got on an uphill merge ramp behind a slow car, floored it to get around, and next thing I know, I’m seeing my tailgate out the side window . Yeah, that backend can definitely get loose in rain!

For road trips with the family in rain, I throw it in 4A just to be safe.

That’s part of the fun though!

Probably has more to do with the tires and all that power. 4A is a safe bet for rainy days.

That’s probably the tires. Honestly, you don’t need 4A just for rain, especially in Seattle’s drizzle. Just ease up on the throttle through turns. She’s a heavy beast, not a sports car!

Put it in slippery mode, and it’ll automatically switch to 4H.

Does running 4A affect MPG?

Honestly, if you’re unsure, take a look at the manual. Not trying to sound rude, but it’s the best way to get accurate info so you don’t risk damaging anything.
