I recently noticed that while driving on the highway with the RPMs holding at 18-1900 which is normal RPM’s for 65-75mph the truck feels like it Surging. The speedo doesn’t move nor do the RPMs but it’s like the engine/turbos are caught in between whether it should boost or not. Anybody else experience this or know why it does this? It’s annoying as hell and it doesn’t stop the entire time I’m in that range. I do have bad phasers but I’m not sure if that’s related
It’s probably the cam phasers. Mine does the same thing too.
I also have a ticking when idling, which I’ve heard could be the cam phasers too.
It might not be the phasers after all. It could just be the normal sound of the engine. I’m probably more sensitive to it right now because of the phasers, so I’m on high alert.
I totally get the paranoia—I went through the same thing! Have you checked your radiator fans? I had knocking noises coming from the engine, and it turned out to be mud in the fan bearing, causing it to get off balance.
I’ve had a similar surge a couple of times, usually after road trips. I figured it was bad fuel since it went away, or maybe a vapor lock in the gas tank. This didn’t happen when my cam phasers were failing, though.
