Should I give up hope on my Raptor R order?

I placed my order for a Raptor R the day the order banks opened in July last year. My dealer is someone I trust—we’ve been doing business with them for 20 years, and they handle our fleet. We have a handshake deal to sell the truck at MSRP with no markup. Supposedly, they’re getting two Rs: one for me and another for a mutual friend. My priority code is 11.

I stopped getting those 45-day updates a while ago and still don’t have a VIN. Meanwhile, my dealer’s sister location already sold an R a few months back (with a $75k markup).

At what point do I just give up? I’m starting to consider a TRX, but I’m not in love with them. Any advice?

I was in the same situation and ended up going with a TRX. Ford just isn’t building enough Rs—maybe 3,000 or less a year. I’m loving the TRX, though. It’s my first RAM, and I got it for $11k under sticker. If you’re interested, I’d jump on one now since the TRX won’t have a Hellcat engine after 2024.

You know what? Screw it, I’m getting a TRX.

If you’re serious, check out Granger Motors in Iowa. They sell under MSRP, and I’ve heard good things about a dealer in Louisiana, too. They even have a Tyrant model with 787hp and a factory warranty.

@Vega
Honestly, the Raptor R interior feels cheap with all that plastic. The TRX interior is luxurious, has no squeaks, and comes with a better sound system. Plus, with an intake upgrade, you’ll get more horsepower than the R. You won’t regret it!

I got mine by using TrueCar. Found a dealer with two coming in and negotiated for one of them. If you can, stick it out for the Raptor R—it’s worth it over the TRX. It’s the fastest production truck in history and has Ford’s highest output engine ever.

@Keegan
Calling it ‘night and day’ compared to the TRX might be a bit of an exaggeration.

We’re talking about an 11.5-second quarter-mile truck versus something slower than a standard F-150 with the 5.0. It’s a big difference.

@Keegan
If you care that much about quarter-mile times, maybe you’re looking at the wrong type of vehicle. These are off-road trucks.

@Keegan
Hate to break it to you, but the Rivian is faster. It’s not ICE, but it’ll dust the R in a drag race. Still, the R is the fastest ICE truck out there.

Your EV toaster might be quick 0-60, but the R is still faster in the quarter-mile. Let’s stick to facts.

@Keegan
Your numbers are off. The R is in the 12s for the quarter-mile, while the Rivian runs an 11.6. Here’s some proof: Drag race link.

@Vega
Enjoy your Dodge and its stellar transmission. You know they’re #1 in DUIs, right?

They probably sold your Raptor to someone else.

Are you sure they actually have an allocation for you? Ford tells dealers exactly how many they’ll get when the order banks open. You might want to ask for proof. They should have a document showing their allocations.

Also, being priority code 11 likely means you’re second in line. Has your friend’s order been built yet? It’s worth double-checking that they haven’t pushed your allocation to another dealership in their network.

@Zuri
They told me they’re getting two, and my friend already got his. I’ll ask for proof of the allocation, though. Thanks for the advice!

Here’s why you might want to give up hope:

  1. There’s an oversupply of regular Raptors. You can buy one at or below MSRP right now.
  2. Markups on the R are still crazy high—$30k, $40k, $50k+
  3. UAW strikes are likely to shut down production soon.

It’s not looking good for anyone waiting on a Raptor R.

I just got lucky and took over an order that someone backed out of. Ordered October 2022, built August 2023. I get why the original buyer gave up—it’s a long wait. Yours might roll over to a 2024 at this rate.

Save your money and go with a 37 package. The R is cool, but it’s not $50k cooler.

I’ve had a Gen1 and currently own a Gen2. Not sure I see the point of upgrading to a Gen3 with the same engine.
