Fuel Question… anyone running their '25 Raptor on lower octane?

Had a 2017 Raptor I loved but had to trade because every time it rained, it smelled like mold, and I couldn’t find the source no matter how much I checked. So, I ended up with a '22 Wildtrak Bronco because of the inventory shortage.

Now I’m thinking about going back to a Raptor but wanted to ask about fuel. My old one was fine on 87 octane, but I’d add 91 for highway trips. The new '25 says 91 is required. Anyone using 87 or 89 without issues? Just wanted to get some real-world advice from folks here.

I always run 93. I’ve had a few turbo vehicles over the years (main one was a 550hp ‘90 300zx). My advice is to put the best fuel you can in these trucks. It helps avoid pre-detonation, which can mess up the engine, and I get better mileage and performance too. As someone else here said, if you’re worried about gas, maybe the Raptor isn’t the best pick.

According to the manual, it’s designed to run on 87, but you’ll see better performance with 91 or higher.

The manual says 91 due to pre-ignition risks. Running on anything lower could harm the engine. If premium fuel isn’t affordable, the Raptor may not be the right choice.

That’s not exactly true.

Just follow the owner’s manual. Here’s the link if you need it: owners manual

Ignoring knock risks could blow your engine. Raptors need premium gas.

Keep reading a couple more paragraphs… knock is real and can destroy an engine. I bet you wait 10k miles to change your oil too.

Doesn’t say that at all, but sure, you do you. Have a good one!

Just scroll two paragraphs down.

Yeah, if you can’t afford premium, maybe pass on the Raptor. But you won’t damage it by using lower octane once in a while… it’s not like a Hellcat that needs premium.

@Whit
And by that logic, you must also wait 10k miles to change your oil!

Wait, you don’t change oil every 10k?

I change mine every 5k.

Yeah, it’s like, crazy to follow the manufacturer’s advice on fuel and oil… what do they know?
