First-time Raptor buyer… Need advice on what to look for

Hey all,

I’m finally ready to buy my first Raptor and could use some advice. There are two used ones at my local dealer:

  1. 2017 with 110k miles for $45k
  2. 2011 with 115k miles for $30k

How well do these trucks hold up with higher mileage? Are there specific years or issues I should avoid? Any general tips for buying a used Raptor would be great. Thanks in advance!

Those two trucks are pretty different. The Gen1 (2011) has a V8 and is more old-school, while the Gen2 (2017) has more tech, better fuel efficiency, and is lighter. It really depends on what you’re looking for.

Both generations can go well past 200k miles if maintained properly, but they’re still F-150s at heart, so expect Ford-level reliability.

Check out forums specifically for Raptor owners. There are tons of guides and advice on what to look for when buying. It’ll help you figure out what fits you best.

I personally wouldn’t spend $30k or $45k on a truck with over 100k miles, but if I had to pick, I’d go for the 2011. The 2017 has more known issues like cam phasers and the plastic oil pan.

I’ve owned both Gen1 and Gen2 Raptors, and overall, I prefer the Gen2. It really depends on what’s most important to you.

@Dustin
I hear you! Prices do seem high for the mileage, but it’s a Raptor, so I guess that’s just how it is. Thanks for the input!

@Dustin
With your budget, I’d suggest looking at a 2013 or 2014 Gen1 instead. Those are the best of that generation.

If you’re looking at a Gen1, go for a 2013-2014 model. I have a 2012 and love it, but the newer ones in that generation can upgrade to SYNC3 for Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, which is a big plus.

MPG probably isn’t a concern if you’re buying a Raptor, so go for the 6.2L V8. It’s more reliable, holds value better, and there’s plenty of aftermarket support. Just be aware of a few common issues: spark plug placement (easy fix), sunroof problems, and rear sliding windows getting stuck.

I got my 2012 with 115k miles for $33k, and it’s spotless. Couldn’t be happier!

I’ve got a 2017 and bought it at 28k miles. Now I’m at 74k. I love the truck, but I’m nervous about what’ll happen when it hits 100k. I’ve had some issues already, like cam phasers going out at 40k and cylinder/spark plug replacements at 60k. It’s a great truck, but you have to baby it more than I expected compared to my older vehicles with V8 engines.

What specifically makes you nervous about the 3.5 engine?

It just seems high-maintenance for such an expensive truck. You have to stay on top of oil changes, and the cam phaser issues are a real headache. I came from naturally aspirated V8s, and they felt more bulletproof in comparison.

If you want a Gen1, stick with a 2013 or 2014. For Gen2, aim for 2018 or newer. The earlier models in both generations have more known issues.

Agreed, this is the way to go.

I’ve owned all three generations. For your budget, I’d recommend looking at 2018 or newer. The 2017s have issues like cam phasers and the plastic oil pan, and the 2011 likely has had several owners by now. Plus, Gen1 trucks need the Fox shocks rebuilt every 50k miles. Just my opinion, though.

@Keir
Thanks for the advice! Most of what I’ve been hearing is to look at 2018 or newer, so I’m leaning that way.

Gen1 all day. I’ve seen them go past 250k miles. Just make sure you check the owner’s maintenance records and habits.
