F150 vs Raptor Potential

I know this has been asked a bunch but none of the threads I’ve seen ask what I’m curious about.

Honestly I don’t plan on offroading much, I know that’s the point of the Raptor but I like the power the Raptor puts out.

What’s the difference in the engines? I know Gen 2 Raptor vs equivalent F150 has upgraded engine internals, but with the new F150s coming with 400hp, do they have the same internals now?

Tuning-wise, how does the power of a normal 3.5 compare to the Raptor?

PowerBoost has more power than the non-R Raptor. If you just want some go-fast every now and then, it’s your ticket.

Drag race and 0-60 tests show the Raptor is about even with a regular 3.5L due to the extra weight. The softer rear suspension might also play a role.

I know last-gen Raptors had reinforced internals, but I’m unsure about the new generation. GooseTuned can push the Raptor close to 600hp, so I was wondering if the normal 3.5EB can handle that safely.

@Storm
Unless you have $10k for a new 10R80 sitting around, I wouldn’t tune a truck under warranty.

You’d still have to pay $10k out of warranty though.

True, but I added a 10-year/100k warranty for $1,500. My 2020 is in for a new valve body and CDF drum right now, and I don’t want to think about the out-of-pocket cost.

@Reilly
My credit union’s extended warranty covers modifications. Pretty sick.

HO 3.5 has dual exhaust and may have different internals and compression ratio, allowing more boost. Stock F150s tuned for 93 octane can get close to HO power, potentially even exceeding it with custom tuning.

@Jael
Only the 2019 and 2020 Limited models have the HO 3.5.

That’s a shame. I love the 2017 F150 design. Might have to do a front-end conversion. Do the newer ones have the same HO?

@Storm
Nope. The 2021+ Limited comes with PowerBoost instead.

The HO 3.5 has a lower compression ratio, upgraded crankshaft (shared with the Ford GT), and different turbos. Regular Ecoboost engines can be tuned for more power but lose OEM safety margins.

Do the 400hp F150s use the same HO engine as the Raptor or a normal one tuned higher?

@Storm
The 400hp engine is different. The 430hp variant is a hybrid with a 30hp electric motor.

Got it. Thanks for the clarification!

I bought a 2019 F150 for $35k and put about $10k into mods (wheels, tires, intercooler, tune, etc.). It’s now pushing 600hp at the crank.

That’s sick. What’s your 0-60 time? Done any handling mods?

@Storm
3.58 seconds on E85 with 3.31 gears and 4x4. Lost about 0.5 seconds after adding 35-inch tires. Handling mods are next.

Gen 2 teardown showed no major internal differences between Raptor and regular 3.5. The power difference comes from tuning and turbo compressor designs. My tuned 3.5 ran 12.17 @ 112 MPH on E50.
