As the title says, I’ve had my eye on a Ford Raptor for some years now. I’ve gotten to the point to where I’m starting to research/read into raptors in a little bit more depth.
What I’ve gathered thus far is that there is possible cam phasers issues that have an open recall. Outside of that, what should I keep in mind? Is there a specific mileage range to stay clear from (nothing over 120 etc)
For perspective, I have roughly around 40k im willing to spend which lands me in the 2017-2018 range. However, if there was reason to look at let’s say 2019 I’m willing to flex another 5k if needed.
Any insight and or things to know when buying a raptor would be greatly appreciated. I live in a fairly remote area so most likely will have to have this truck shipped so naturally want to make sure I thin out all potential “traps”
They are reliable, but if the phasers haven’t been replaced, that could be an issue. If possible, consider getting a Ford warranty. The way the vehicle was maintained and used is more important than anything else. It’s best to find one that has had regular oil changes and shows minimal signs of off-roading. Here in Texas, they’re quite common and often used as everyday commuters, which is what you want.
Someone else mentioned that you’ll need money, and that’s definitely true. A Raptor isn’t cheap. Whatever you choose, plan to spend a few thousand more on maintenance items like tires and shocks. Plus, filling up that 36-gallon tank with premium fuel isn’t for everyone (it can run on 87, but it performs poorly with that).
Based on my research, the 2017-2018 models have plastic oil pans, which might be more likely to leak. I’ve seen quite a few with leaks on sales lots. Because of this, I’m considering going for a 2019 model or newer. I could be mistaken, though, so feel free to correct me. I’m in the same situation as you, trying to learn more!
